DAVID NERO - SUPERSTAR
**Interview from Issue 10 of Westside Pro Wrestling Newsletter - June 2010**
"Superstar" David Nero is a former AAW and Independent Champion who has made a mark with All Action Wrestling fans since his debut in June 2007. Nero is the
youngest ever champion in the four plus year history of the promotion.
Tez spoke to the former AAW Champion, just before Aftermath where he took on James Grace in a tournament set to crown a new Unified Champion.
WPW: You made your debut with AAW in mid 2007 as fan favourite, David Adams. Can you tell us about your early days in the Action Zone?
NERO: It's actually a pretty funny story. My first match was intended to be a handicap match debuting myself and B-Money against NC Viper. But due to Money being sidelined with a knee injury it was changed to myself, taking on the mammoth NC Viper. Now I’m not going to point fingers, but had B-Money been able to compete I think we had a real shot of winning our first ever match in All Action Wrestling (laughs).
WPW: In just the third match of your career, you took on then AAW Champion, James Draker in a non-title match. What was it like for you to be put in a big match with the champion that soon?
NERO: Again a series of unforeseen circumstances arose, and I was thrown into a match against the Entertainment star James Draker (now EPW's Garry Schmidt). It was a little daunting being thrown into the match with the current AAW Champion as I had another match later in the night main eventing against Jarrad Slate for the then Independent Championship (now the Western Australian State Championship). So you could say it was a nerve racking night for me but the night went well and both guys helped me a great deal in their own respective ways.
WPW: The transformation of David Adams into "Superstar" David Nero began after you lost a "Loser Loses Gimmick" Match against Percy T. Longwinkler at Action in May 2008. The character change has been a success, did it take long for the "Superstar" character to click?
NERO: Thank you. I believe the character change has been a great success to me professionally as it gave me a base on which to build on. It did take awhile for the superstar gimmick to click with myself because it had to make me creative and encourage me to try different things all of which at the time was very strange to be but so far I have to say I have enjoyed it, and can’t ever imagine going back.
WPW: You won your first title (Independent Championship) in October 2008, defeating B-Money, just 16 months after you debuted. The title reign was a short 20 days, before you lost it to Killah, in a Five Man Scramble Match, at the first SuperClash. How did you feel after winning the title, and was it disappointing to lose it so quickly?
NERO: Interesting question. It felt good after winning the championship from B-Money. But the short title change and the title changing multiple times before me made it not as glamorous and I had first thought, and losing it 20 days later was not a happy moment but stuff like this happens, and nothing can be done about it.
WPW: You made a one off appearance at SHWA’s first ever show, Exodus in 2008, along with Bravo Tarir. Is there any possibility you could make a return appearance in the future?
NERO: Well in wrestling you should never say never and if a good opportunity came up who am I to say no, work is work. But for the time being I haven’t been contacted, and I am quite comfortable wrestling for the biggest crowds in all of Western Australia, if not Australia as a nation to date.
WPW: You made your interstate debut late last year in Adelaide for Pro Wrestling Ignition, do you have any possible interstate bookings on the horizon?
NERO: Wrestling interstate for me was an eye opening experience, for me I don’t think the majority of wrestlers understand the psychology behind a match and getting the crowd involved as well as proper ring attire and fitness. I mean were there to entertain people not disgust them.
Apart from that it was good and a different experience, plus I got to visit Adelaide which I haven’t visited before. For the moment I don’t have any plans to wrestle for any interstate wrestling promotions, just for the fact I feel I it isn’t worth it and I’m happy where I am wrestling for the best product Australian wrestling has to offer.
WPW: At Unleashed in December, you become AAW Champion for the first time after you defeated then champion Dustin Dice and The Shark in a Triple Threat Match, becoming the youngest ever AAW champion. Was winning the title the main highlight of your career so far, and what are your thoughts about the title being unified with the Platinum Australian title?
NERO: Winning the championship is a great achievement in my career but I hope that it doesn’t become the greatest as I plan to build on this achievement and find more opportunities to better myself as a entertainer.
My thoughts on the AAW Championship being unified with the Platinum Australian title? Well I think it is great. Great for the company, great for the boys and great for the fans as it will provide an interesting concept to the already booming AAW.
WPW: What have been some of your favourite matches and moments in your career so far?
NERO: Well my career is only just starting so the amount of highlighted moments might be slim. Some moments I am proud of are being the
youngest wrestler to debut in AAW history at just days after turning 15. As well as winning the AAW Championship from Dustin Dice.
Some of my favourite matches in my career thus far would have to include working with my trainer The Shark, competing in matches with AAW's resident luchadore, Bravo Tarir, and even All Action Wrestling’s rising star, James Grace.
WPW: What are you hoping to achieve for the rest of 2010 and beyond?
NERO: My 2010 hopes are quite simple really, continue to compete at my very best and grow as a performer and strive to better the premier wrestling product in all of Australia.
WPW: Thank you for speaking with Westside Pro Wrestling, David.
