SONJAY DUTT - THE QUIET GURU
**Interview from Issue 4 of Westside Pro Wrestling newsletter - December 2009**
In what is Westside Pro Wrestling’s biggest name interview ever, Tez spoke to the Playa from the Himalaya during his visit to Western Australia for New Horizon Pro Wrestling’s Global Impact! tour in October.
Hi Sonjay, thank you very much for taking the time to speak to WPW.
WPW: How did you get your start in Pro Wrestling after starting as a backyarder and who did you train with?
SONJAY: I went to wrestling school to get trained properly. I trained with Larry Sharpe at first.
WPW: Who were your idols growing up?
SONJAY: Sabu, Ric Flair, and The Great Sasuke.
WPW: You worked in Combat Zone Wrestling, a fed known more for the “Ultraviolent” style of wrestling, yet it also has had great Indy workers like Chris Hero and Bryan Danielson. What was it like to work for CZW?
SONJAY: Lots of fun. It was a great atmosphere.
WPW: What have been your personal favourite matches during your career so far?
SONJAY: I can’t really say I have a favourite, but recently I enjoyed my Ladder Match with Lethal a lot.
WPW: Who have been your favourite opponents to work with?
SONJAY: Jay Lethal, Petey Williams, Machine Guns, Ruckus.
WPW: In September 2005 there was nearly a riot when Simon Diamond, Shark Boy and yourself made a visit to India. Did it get to a truly scary point for you, or was it handled well by the security?
SONJAY: Security handled it fine, but it was a great experience.
WPW: You had some memorable moments during your time in TNA, like the Paparazzi Championship Series and the So Cal Val/Jay Lethal triangle. What were your favourite moments?
SONJAY: The Paparazzi stuff was a lot of fun.
WPW: Were you at all disappointed you didn’t get a run with the TNA X-Division title in your five years there?
SONJAY: No, I was fortunate to be there.
WPW: You made your return to Ring of Honor in May 2009 after a long absence. A lot has changed since you were there, new bookers, a TV deal etc. What was it like to return?
SONJAY: I can’t say, since I wasn’t there for too long before.
WPW: Is it still a goal of yours to work for WWE and is the TNA door still open for the future?
SONJAY: My goal is to continue to make an impact in pro wrestling.
Special thanks to the management of New Horizon Pro Wrestling for help setting up this interview.
